In a stunning turn of events, Mark Turgeon and the University of Maryland have mutually agreed to part ways. Turgeon officially stepped down as head coach of the Maryland men’s basketball team eight games into the season.
Maryland assistant Danny Manning will serve as interim coach.
Turgeon reportedly flirted with other jobs during the offseason. His name floated around in rumors for Oklahoma. However, he inked a contract extension that would have kept him in College Park through the 2025-26 season, coming off a Round of 32 appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season.
Maryland entered the season ranked No. 21 in the Associated Press Poll. Unfortunately, the ranking was short-lived. The Terrapins suffered three upset losses to George Mason, Louisville and most recently Virginia Tech.
Turgeon spent 11 seasons with Maryland. Despite having strong recruiting classes and the likes of Melo Trimble, Bruno Fernando, Jalen Smith, Anthony Cowan and Kevin Huerter, Maryland reached just one Sweet 16 appearance under Turgeon.
The fan base had grown unhappy with Turgeon in charge of the program. Ultimately, for fans, a change was long overdue. The only shock is Turgeon entered this season as Maryland’s head coach with a contract extension.
Turgeon compiled a record of 226-116 overall (.661) with Maryland.
