Washington may have lost TE Logan Thomas for season on brutal yet legal play

The Washington Football Team believes tight end Logan Thomas has suffered a significant knee injury. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Thomas “likely” tore his ACL and MCL on a brutal yet legal play.

Raiders defensive end and former Maryland star Yannick Ngakoue went low to chop down Thomas. It’s a technique that defensive players use to avoid being blocked out of the play.

While some may be upset about the fairness of Ngakoue’s move, it was perfectly legal because the low block occurred inside the tackle box area.

Earlier in the game Raiders safety Jonathan Abram tried a similar move to beat a block and make a tackle in the third quarter. However, he was penalized for a low block because the play occurred outside the tackle box.

Still, whether Thomas’ injury was legal, dirty, or fair, it doesn’t change the fact Washington could be once again without one of their top pass catchers. And this time for the rest of the season.

Thomas will undergo an MRI Monday to understand the full extent of his injury.

Sunday, Thomas was playing in his second game back after missing six with a hamstring injury. His presence was felt early, when he made a leaping one-handed catch in the back of the end zone for Washington’s first touchdown against the Raiders.

His 35-yard catch in the third quarter put Washington into the red zone, setting up an Antonio Gibson touchdown catch early in the fourth.

Thomas signed a three-year contract extension worth just over $24 million this past offseason.

This year, he was in line for another big season after his 72-catch campaign in 2020. However, injuries will force his numbers to drastically drop. Thomas has just 14 catches for 196 yards and three touchdowns this season.
