Wizards wanted Spencer Dinwiddie to sit out first 15 games

Spencer Dinwiddie is averaging a respectable 13.4 points and 5.3 assists in first 22 games with his new team the Washington Wizards. But considering how great he started the year, it’s been widely noticeable Dinwiddie may have hit a bit of a wall.

Not only is this his first season in a Wizards uniform, it’s his first season returning from a torn ACL. Dinwiddie tore his ACL on December 27, 2020 while with the Brooklyn Nets.

Dinwiddie rehabbed and got himself in position to land a lucrative three-year deal worth $54 million with the Wizards this summer.

Maybe because of the excitement of a new NBA home, Dinwiddie resisted the Wizards’ suggestion to sit out the first 15 games of the season, according to Yahoo Sports’ Vincent Goodwill.

Dinwiddie started the season off averaging 19.8 points through his first five games. Since then Dinwiddie has stalled offensively minus a two-game stretch in November he scored 50 points.

His shooting percentage has dropped to 39.2% on the season.

Meanwhile, his usage has dipped from it’s peak of 35.5% on Oct. 22 to as low as 12.9% on Dec. 5. Coincidentally, the Wizards have stumbled loving eight of their last 13 games after a 10-3 start.

Could Dinwiddie’s recent slump be attributed to the rigors of rushing back from a major knee injury?

At the very least, Goodwill’s revelation will shine some light towards a possible explanation to what’s going on with Dinwiddie as of late.
