The Washington Football Team big free agent pickup, wide receiver Curtis Samuel, has dealt with a groin injury all season. Now, just as the team may need him the most, Samuel did not practice Wednesday thanks to a new injury.
Samuel missed practice with a hamstring injury, head coach Ron Rivera confirmed.
Samuel has missed eight games this season with a groin injury that required core muscle surgery back in June. After a three-game stint on IR and him missing five games with a setback after his initial return, Samuel has played in the last three games on a limit snap count.
He played 20 offensive snaps in each of the first two games since returning in Week 12. However, he was limited to 14 snaps last week in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Rivera downplayed the decrease in snaps to personnel packages and the flow of the game.
Now, Samuel is dealing with a hamstring injury. This latest hiccup adds to the struggles of his first year in Washington. Samuel signed a three-year $34.5 million contract with Washington this offseason. However, he’s been limited to five games, 10 touches and 38 yards thus far.
The timing couldn’t be worse. Washington’s top wideout Terry McLaurin is in the concussion protocol and did not practice Wednesday as well.
In addition to McLaurin’s concussion, wide receiver Cam Sims is one of 17 Washington players currently on the reserve/COVID-19 list. That’s not to mention, tight end Logan Thomas being out for the season with a torn ACL and pass-catching running back JD McKissic being in the concussion protocol.
Washington is in danger of not having a handful of their top receiving options for their game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday that will have huge playoff implications.
