Washington Football Team running back Antonio Gibson was slowed by a toe injury in Tuesday’s loss at the Philadelphia Eagles. Washington head coach Ron Rivera acknowledged to reporters Gibson’s injury is “very similar” to the turf toe that hampered him last year.
That’s not the news fans want to hear. Washington is already down JD McKissic. The spell back will at least miss the next two games after being placed on injured reserve before the Philadelphia game with a neck injury.
Gibson started off the game against the Eagles hot, scoring a rushing touchdown on Washington’s second offensive possession and snagging two catches.
Unfortunately, the toe injury changed the dynamic of the game. Gibson finished with 26 yards on 15 carries with six catches for 39 yards.
Last year, a turf toe hampered Gibson at the end of his exceptional rookie season. He missed two games before being limited in the final two regular season games and Washington’s wild card playoff loss to Tampa Bay.
While Gibson felt fine to start the season, it was expected his toe would be something to watch for year 2. However, a stress fracture in his shin soared to the spotlight. By nature, the toe became a distant memory until Tuesday night.
Despite the injury hurdles, Gibson has rushed for 862 yards and six touchdowns this season.
