Wayne Gretzky: ‘No doubt’ Alex Ovechkin breaks his goals record

Alex Ovechkin’s “biggest fan” believes it’s “no doubt” the Washington Capitals captain will break the NHL’s all-time goals record.

The current all-time leader, Wayne Gretzky says it’s a matter of time when Alex Ovechkin will pass his 894 career goals mark.

“It’s not even a question that he will pass me, and I think it’s great,” Gretzky told The New York Times’ David Waldstein. “He’s well on his way to 40 or 50 goals this year, maybe more. There is no doubt that ultimately he will break the record.”

Ovechkin is fourth all-time with 752 goals. After dealing with back-to-back shortened seasons due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ovechkin is back on track.

He’s second in the league this season with 22 goals through 31 games. At the age of 36, Ovechkin doesn’t seem to be slowing down. He’s on pace to score 58 by the end of the season which would add 36 more to his tally.

He’s 14 goals behind Jaromir Jagr for third on the all-time list. Gordie Howe is second with 801 goals.

Ovechkin signed a five-year extension this past offseason that will keep him in Washington past the age 40. That appears to be more than sufficient time for him to ultimately pass Gretzky as the greatest goal scorer ever.
