Washington Football Team defensive end Montez Sweat was excused from practice Wednesday following the tragic killing of his brother.
According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Anthony R. Sweat, 27, of Stone Mountain, Ga., was shot outside of an apartment complex in Henrico County, Virginia Tuesday afternoon.
When police arrived many people had already fled the scene but others remained to administer aid to Sweat. Sweat, who was the only victim, was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS.
Washington head coach Ron Rivera said the team would make resources available for Montez Sweat and other players grieving the loss.
“It is rough, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families,” Rivera said. “We try to make sure that players understand that we’re here for them. We do have a team psychologist and she’s available, as well as myself (and the other coaches). … We’re there for them.”
Montez Sweat is in his third season with Washington after being a first-round draft pick in 2019. This season, Sweat has missed five games. He missed four games with a fractured jaw and one game while on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
