The Washington Football Team will reveal their new name, logo and uniforms on Feb. 2 team president Jason Wright announced on Tuesday morning.
The new name won’t be the popular fan choice of “Wolves” or “RedWolves” for trademark reasons, Wright added.
Early on we understood Wolves — or some variation of it — was one of our fan favorites. As I’ve said all along, we take feedback from our fans seriously, and because of your interest in this name, we put Wolves on a list of options to explore fully. Once we began looking into Wolves, however, we became aware of a notable challenge: trademarks held by other teams would limit our ability to make the name our own. And without Wolves, variations like RedWolves wouldn’t have been viable either for these and other reasons.
In a seven-minute video that featured former Washington greats and current executives Doug Williams and general manager Martin Mayhew, there was a sneak peak of the uniforms and helmets.
Washington dropped its former name “Redskins” in July 2020 after pressure from the Native American community and sponsors, who deemed the name disparaging to Indigenous People.
The franchise adopted the Washington Football Team moniker, playing under the name for the past two seasons.
