Just like that the Washington Football Team has moved swiftly to re-sign one of their own. According to the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Washington left tackle Charles Leno Jr. has agreed to a three-year, $37.5 million contract extension.
Earlier Wednesday, ESPN’s John Keim reported on his podcast, Washington reached out to Leno on an extension.
Leno signed a one-year, $4 million deal with Washington in May two weeks after being released by the Chicago Bears after seven seasons. He was on the fourth year of a four-year, $37.5 million deal at the time of his release from Chicago.
Now, the 30-year old has a new home for the next three seasons, anchoring the left side of Washington’s offensive line.
His $12.5 million annual salary average is modest, considering the top-10 highest-paid offensive tackles are north of $17.5 million to $23 million-plus.
This season, Leno has started in all 16 games for Washington. He has played 1,062 snaps, allowing six sacks and drawing one holding penalty, according to Pro Football Focus.
A seventh-round draft pick in 2014 out of Kansas State, Leno hasn’t missed a start since Week 4 of the 2015 season.
