The Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team was back on the court for the first time since Dec. 18 following COVID-19 issues. Unfortunately for Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing and his team, the return to the court resulted in an embarrassing 92-64 loss to Marquette.
Following the 28-point loss, a frustrated Ewing ripped his team saying legendary Hoyas head coach John Thompson Jr. is “rolling over in his grave” for their performance.
“As a player who helped build this program, I am disappointed in my team’s performance,” Ewing said per Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post. “This is not what Georgetown basketball is about. Big John is rolling over in his grave for the performance that we showed tonight.
“This is not what I’m about,” Ewing continued. “This is not what my team’s about. So, everybody is on notice. If they want to play, they’re going to have to friggin’ play. That’s it. Have a good night.”
The Hoyas shot just 29.9% from the field and fell behind by as many as 32 points in the second half. Marquette used a tenacious defense and shot a blistering 59.1% from the field in the lopsided win on the Hoyas’ home court named after John Thompson Jr.
Ewing became a star as a player at Georgetown under Thompson before having a Hall of Fame NBA career with the New York Knicks.
Thompson, who won a national championship in 1984 with Ewing as his lead player, passed away last August. The university dedicated their home court to Thompson earlier this season.
Ewing succeeded Thompson’s son John Thompson III as head coach in 2017. Friday’s loss dropped Georgetown to 6-6 on the season and Ewing to 68-65 during his five ongoing seasons as Georgetown’s coach.
