Alex Ovechkin breaks mask of Vegas goaltender with hard shot

The Washington Capitals had 34 shots on goal in Monday’s 1-0 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas goaltender Robin Lehner stopped every single one of them, including one with his mask on a rifling shot from Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin.

Ovechkin ripped a one-timer from his office during a Capitals’ two-man advantage. Lehner took the shot off his mask, breaking it in the process.

The mask had a visible dent. Lehner had to switch his mask. Follwoing the game, Lehner called the sequence “a little scary.”

“It was a really hard shot to take in the head,” Lehner said, per Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press. “He broke my cage. It was a little scary. You felt the cage kind of bent in to the cheekbone a little bit. I was lucky it wasn’t a little bit harder.”

Fortunately, Lehner escaped an injury.

Ovechkin’s shot came moments after a Capitals fan was struck by a puck that flew over the protective glass.
