The Washington Commanders are expected to hire veteran assistant Juan Castillo as their tight end coach following the retirement of Pete Hoener, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
The Commanders announced Friday Hoener is retiring as a coach after 22 years in the NFL. He spent his last 11 seasons alongside Commanders head coach Ron Rivera. Nine with the Carolina Panthers and the last two in Washington.
Meanwhile Castillo, 62, has just as lengthy a resume. Castillo first entered the NFL’s coaching ranks in 1995 with the Philadelphia Eagles. It was there he first worked with Rivera, as Rivera was a linebackers coach from 1999-2003.
Castillo was an offensive line with the Chicago Bears the past two seasons. He has also coached with the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens.
Logan Thomas, John Bates, Sammie Reyes and Tyrone Swoopes re the tight ends under contract for 2022 season.
Thomas will be returning from a torn ACL he suffered in December. His timetable to return is unclear. Ricky Seals-Jones, who replaced Thomas in part, is a free agent this offseason.
