Cowboys agree to trade Amari Cooper to the Browns for a bargain

In 2020, Dallas Cowboys re-signed wide receiver Amari Cooper to five-year, $100 million contract. That’s despite a strong push that included a larger offer from the Washington Commanders.

Two years later, the pact between Cooper and the Cowboys is over. Dallas has agreed to trade the talented wide out and a sixth-round draft pick to the Cleveland Browns for 2022 fifth-round pick and a sixth-round pick, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Browns fill a position of need and give quarterback Baker Mayfield a much-needed passing target in the absence of Odell Beckham Jr. and pending departure of Jarvis Landry.

Meanwhile, Dallas clears $16 million of much-needed cap space moving on from Cooper. Reports surfaced at the start of the offseason that the Cowboys were looking to either release or trade Cooper. Given the necessity to part ways with Cooper, drastically dropped Dallas’ asking price to recoup some value.

Amari Cooper was signed a month before wide receiver Ceedee Lamb fell into the Cowboys’ lap in the first-round of the 2020 draft. Lamb has emerged as Dallas’ top wide receiver, making Cooper a very expensive No. 2 wide receiver.

Last season, Cooper was third on the team with 68 catches and second with 865 receiving yards but was tied with tight end Dalton Schultz with eight touchdown catches.

Now, the Cowboys can afford re-signing wide receiver Michael Gallup and the $10.9 million franchise tag they placed on Schultz last week.
