Details of Brandon Scherff’s deal with Jaguars highlights how bad he wanted out of Washington

The numbers on the new deal for Brandon Scherff with the Jacksonville Jaguars have finally surfaced. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the five-time Pro Bowl guard will sign a three-year, $49.5 million deal with $30 million guaranteed.

The Jaguars’ deal makes Scherff the highest-paid guard in the NFL on a multi-year deal with an annual average value of $16.5 million.

Now the average annual value of his deal is less than Washington paid him last season on the second of two consecutive franchise tags. Scherff was paid a guaranteed $18.036 million last season.

The $30 million fully guaranteed is also less than the $33.07 million Washington paid him in total over the last two seasons with the franchise tags. He’ll receive just over $32.7 million in the first two years with the Jaguars.

Brandon Scherff and his agent, Neil Cornrich, used the franchise tag as a baseline. But the final numbers weren’t that much more. It was widely expected Scherff’s asking price would have been at minimum the $18 million he made on the second tag for an AAV. There was speculation he would garner $20 million per year — a steep price to pay a guard.

Last year before the July 15 deadline, the Commanders made an offer that would have made Scherff the highest-paid guard that he declined. That wasn’t hard given the highest-paid guard on a multi-year deal before Monday made $16 million per year.

Scherff’s franchise tag trumped that. It’s unclear the specifics of Washington’s offer. But one has to believe it was competitive to what Scherff ultimately received. However, the deal with the Jaguars illustrates how much Scherff wanted  out of Washington.
