The Washington Commanders have officially released safety Landon Collins with a post-June 1 designation. The move increases Washington’s salary cap savings to $11.9 million from $6.6 million by making the release immediate.
The only caveat, Collins cap hit of $16.2 million will remain on the Commanders’ books until June 2.
The Commanders informed Landon Collins he would be released last week after he rejected the team’s request to restructure his contract.
“They asked me to take a pay cut. The first one was fine. Then they asked me to take another one. The money changed after they [traded for] Carson Wentz. I’ll just take my chances in free agency,” Collins told CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson.
Collins signed a six-year, $84 million deal with Washington as a free agent in 2019. The team later reworked his deal to push some of the salary cap ramifications on later years. Those down-the-road ramifications came up this season.
Trading for quarterback Carson Wentz and his $28.3 million cap hit didn’t help the situation, Thus, Collins hit the market looking for a new home. The Commanders lesser the cap hit and gain more savings after June 1.
