Kevin Willard expected to poach away notable Ohio State assistant for his Maryland staff

New Maryland men’s basketball head coach Kevin Willard is wasting no time constructing his staff. Shortly after being named the Terrapins coach on Monday, Willard already has his first assistant lined up.

According to Jeff Ermann of Inside MD Sports, Ohio State assistant Tony Skinn is expected to leave the Buckeyes for Maryland.

Skinn is a familiar name for those in the DMV area. He attended Takoma Academy in Takoma Park, Maryland for high school. After a stint in JUCO, he played three seasons at George Mason.

He was the starting point guard during the Patriots’ Cinderella Final Four run in 2006.

After his playing days were over, Skinn got into the coaching ranks, starting on the DC’s AAU scene with Team Takeover.

That landed him a three-year stint as an assistant at Louisiana Tech before joining Willard’s staff at Seton Hall for another three seasons. Skinn left Seton Hall for Ohio State for this season.

Now, he’ll reunite with Willard. The pickup is huge for Maryland. Skinn is a renowned recruiter and his familiarity with the DMV area. That could help rejuvenate Maryland’s recruiting presence in the area. Something the previous head coach Mark Turgeon was knocked for not doing.
