Derrius Guice, former Washington RB, attempting NFL comeback

Former Washington running back Derrius Guice auditioned for NFL scouts at the HUB Football Camp in California this past weekend, according to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network.

By all accounts, including videos of the workout, Guice excelled in drills, was in outstanding shape, and displayed a positive demeanor in his interactions with staff and other participants.

“Derrius came in with a great attitude and a lot of energy,” said Mike Williams, the general manager of HUB Football. “He was engaging with other players and the coaches and demonstrated that he can catch the ball well out of the backfield.”

Derrius Guice last played in the NFL in 2019. Washington selected him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He missed his rookie season entirely after he suffered a torn ACL in his first preseason game.

He returned in 2019 and played five games before a torn meniscus in his opposite knee ended his season.

Washington released Guice in August 2020 after the former LSU star was arrested and charged with multiple accounts of domestic violence. Strangulation, assault, battery, and destruction of property were among the charges he faced.

In two seasons with Washington, he rushed for 245 yards with three total touchdowns.

By June 2021, all of the charges were dropped and Guice settled with his now ex-girlfriend.

The NFL suspended Guice for the first six games of the 2021 season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.

His legal issues as a pro are behind him. However, there are multiple serious allegations of sexual misconduct against Guice stemming from his time at LSU. The allegations arose in the same month he was arrested and released by Washington.

Two women have accused Guice of sexual assault in separate incidents from 2016. He was a freshman at LSU at the time.

Another LSU student accused Guice of taking a partially nude photograph of her without her knowledge and sharing it with some of his teammates. The alleged incident also occurred in 2016. The incident was reported to police and LSU, but Guice wasn’t disciplined by the school at the time.

In March 2021, a 74-year-old woman accused Guice of sexual harassment while he was attending a 2017 high school game at Louisiana’s Superdome.

LSU banned Guice from its athletic program indefinitely and removed him from the school’s record books.

Derrius Guice is still young. He turns 25 in June. He could still have plenty left to offer. Still it’s unclear the level of interest of teams. He’ll have to show the injuries are behind him.

More importantly, show a level of maturity and growth that would subdue the numerous red flags. The same red flags that caused his to be taken off some teams draft boards. As well as the same red flags that landed him outside of the league.
