Maryland junior center Qudus Wahab announced via Instagram he intends to enter the NCAA’s transfer portal for a second straight year.
“After speaking with the new coaching staff, I believe it’s of my best interest to enter my name in the portal while keeping my options open for the possibility of returning to the University of Maryland,” Wahab wrote on his post.
Wahab played two seasons at Georgetown before transferring down the road to Maryland before last season. He was expected to fill the Terrapins’ hole at center.
While he started 31 games, his role diminished significantly as the season went along. It’s worth noting Maryland had an unexpected coaching change. Mark Turgeon stepped down as head coach eight games into the season. Danny Manning took over as the interim coach.
Qudus Wahab averaged 7.7 point, 5.6 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 19.9 minutes per game. His numbers dropped off tremendously from his sophomore season at Georgetown. Many questioned his decision to transfer.
The Hoyas’ offense featured Wahab under coach Patrick Ewing. At Maryland he became an afterthought in a guard-eccentric offense with Fatts Russell and Eric Ayala leading.
Now the Terrapins have a new head coach after hiring Kevin Willard last week. After discussions with the new staff, Wahab will search for a more suitable fit.
Wahab is the second Maryland player to enter the transfer portal season after the season ended. Sophomore guard Marcus Dockery transferred to Howard last week.
