For seven years, Max Scherzer was the ace of the Washington Nationals. His run covered two of his three Cy Young awards and a World Series ring in 2019. It came to an abrupt end when the Nationals traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers midway through last season.
Now he is a member of the Nationals’ rival the New York Mets. He signed a three-year, $130 million deal this past offseason. This week he will take the mound at Nationals Park as a visitor.
The change in uniform may be hard for a lot of Nats fans to fathom. Another change for Nats fans will be their view towards the right field wall. For years Max Scherzer and his two different colored eyes occupied the wall. With Scherzer now in Mets’ blue, his face and eyes have been removed.
Scherzer is expected to start Friday’s game for the Mets. A hamstring injury ruled him out of Opening Day on Thursday.
He and the Mets arrived in Washington, D.C. this week. On Wednesday, Scherzer threw off the flat at Nats Park to get ready for his outing.
All of it will be unusual and strange. Once the pre-game festivities are done and the first pitch is thrown, we’ll learn to get used to seeing Scherzer with the Mets for the next three years.
