Max Scherzer is now with the New York Mets after seven seasons wearing the ‘Curly W’ with the Washington Nationals. Before he took the mound at Nationals Park as an opposing pitcher, the Nationals honored their former ace on Opening Day.
The Nationals showed their appreciation for Scherzer with a tribute video. The video started out with highlights of his press conference following his signing in 2015 with Washington.
Towards the conclusion there are clips of Scherzer celebrating the club’s 2019 World Series title. The video ends with the words “Thank You Max” with the World Series trophy in the background.
The Nats fans then showed their appreciation, giving Scherzer a warm and welcoming ovation when he was introduced as a visitor.
A hamstring injury kept him from being the Opening Day starter for the Mets. But he’ll make his season debut Friday in Game 2 of the series.
For seven years Scherzer was the Nationals ace. He won two Cy Young awards and was a six-time All-Star. Of course he helped lead the Nats to a World Series title. An accomplishment that stamped a Hall of Fame career.
Unfortunately, the Nationals needed to reset their direction. Scherzer was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers along with Trea Turner to replenish the club’s farm system. Ultimately, Scherzer ended up with the Nats’ NL East rivals the Mets on a three-year, $130 million free agent deal this past Winter.
For the next three seasons Scherzer will be on enemy lines. But, it will be hard for Nationals fans to lose a certain level of appreciation for the best pitcher in the club’s history to date.
