Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin is entering the final year of his rookie contract. While there is a lot of angst among fans, Washington is in no rush to get an extension deal done.
According to 106.7 the Fan’s Grant Paulsen, the Commanders have yet to make a contract offer to McLaurin. That’s despite the team meeting with McLaurin’s agent in February during the scouting combine in his native Indianapolis.
McLaurin emerged immediately as Washington’s top wide receiver after being drafted in the third round in 2019. After a solid rookie season, McLaurin has had back-to-back 1,000 receiving yard seasons.
In three seasons, McLaurin has hauled in 222 receptions, 3,090 yards and 16 touchdowns. All while taking passes from eight different quarterbacks.
Terry McLaurin is certainly deserving of a new deal. The price tag for a premium wide receiver has skyrocketed this past offseason thanks to Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill and Christian Kirk.
It’s only going to continue to shift with the potential new deals for the receivers from the 2019 draft class. McLaurin is set to fit along Deebo Samuel, A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf.
Where that depends on McLaurin and the Commanders.
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera told The Athletic, “we’ve got plenty of time.”
And that may be true. As Paulsen noted, look for late July as a possible timeframe for a McLaurin extension. Just last July Washington inked an extension with defensive tackle Jonathan Allen at the start of training camp.
Keep in mind, Washington will clear more cap space in June at the rate of $11.9 million following the release of safety Landon Collins. Money the Commander could allocate to McLaurin’s next deal.
