Former Washington and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster had a workout with the Miami Dolphins Friday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Foster last played in the NFL back in 2018. The 49ers drafted Foster in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft with the 31st overall pick.
He played 16 games in one season and a half. He was suspended two games to start the 2018 season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, stemming from a weapons offense and a misdemeanor drug offense.
Foster played six games before San Francisco released him following an arrest for domestic violence. The alleged incident occurred at the team’s hotel before a road game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Washington claimed him off waivers. He missed the remainder of the 2018 season while on the Commissioner’s Exempt List. The domestic violence charges were eventually dropped. However, in May of 2019 during OTAs, Foster suffered a serious knee injury in his first practice with Washington.
He suffered nerve damage and a drop foot with the knee injury. After missing the 2019 season entirely, Foster tried to come back in 2020. But he was placed on injured reserve, ending his season for a second straight year.
Foster had three workouts in 2021 but didn’t reach a deal. He hopes to have his injury behind him.
The Dolphins have a new head coach in Mike McDaniel. McDaniel was an assistant with the 49ers during Foster’s two seasons in San Francisco.
