Alex Ovechkin has given the Washington Capitals and their fans a scare. The Great 8 suffered an upper body injury after he was tripped and crashed hard into the boards in the third period of Sunday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The scene wasn’t pretty. Ovechkin hobbled to the tunnel towards the locker room. However, teammate T.J. Oshie says he talked to Ovechkin and believes he will be fine.
“I’ve never met anyone tougher than that guy,” Oshie said per J.J. Regan of NBC Sports Washington. “We all hope he’s fine. I just talked to him and I think he’ll be alright. It’s always scary seeing Big 8 go down and lay on the ice. He’s a tough guy. But i f there was anyone I would imagine wouldn’t miss any more time than he needs to be, it’d be 8.”
Meanwhile, Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette said there are no updates on Ovechkin. We all will have to wait and see how things progress. Getting Ovechkin will be imperative for Washington’s playoff chances.
The 36-year old leads the Capitals with 50 goals and 90 points on the season.
The Capitals have three games remaining before the start of the playoffs. They currently are the second wild card in the Eastern Conference, trailing the Bruins by three points for the top wild card spot.
The Capitals also have a chance to slide into third place in the Metropolitan and avoid a first-round series with top-seed Florida and the Atlantic divisional bracket. Washington trails the Pittsburgh Penguins by one point for third.
