The Washington Capitals are set to embark on a first-round series in the NHL Playoffs against the top seed in the Eastern Conference, the Florida Panthers. Sunday morning they got a positive sign towards the status of captain Alex Ovechkin.
Ovechkin was a full participant in Sunday’s skate. He missed the final three games of the regular season with an upper body injury. The Athletic’s Tarik El-Bashir shared a few clips of Ovechkin during the media availability in Sunday’s skate around.
Alex Ovechkin, 36, was injured in the third period of last Sunday’s game against the Toronto Maples Leafs. Ovechkin was tripped by Leafs goaltender Erik Kallgreen’s stick, sending him crashing into the boards.
Following practice, Ovechkin said he feels good, according to the Washington Post’s Samantha Pell. The NHL’s third all-time leading goal scorer added he could have played in the final three games if it was the playoffs.
But when asked if he will be available to play in Tuesday’s Game 1 at Florida, Ovechkin said “we’ll see.”
Ovechkin on the ice will be a huge boost for the Capitals. He led the team with 50 goals and 90 points this season.
