It’s truly amazing how Alex Ovechkin continues to get wide open for power play goals

Alex Ovechkin is the most prolific goal scorer of his generation. The Washington Capitals captain is third on the NHL’s all-time goals list. He is on pace to eventually surpass Wayne Gretzky as the sport’s greatest all-time goal scorer.Ā

Additionally, no player has more power play goals than him. Yet, teams somehow employ a strange strategy against the Capitals whenever Ovechkin is on the iceā€¦ by leaving him wide open.

The Florida Panthers became the latest victims to fall asleep and forget about the biggest offensive threat in all of hockey.Ā

Ovechkin got loose from the Panthersā€™ penalty kill, depositing a one-timer in the net in the third period to extend Washingtonā€™s lead to 4-1. The goal served as the dagger in the Capitalsā€™ 6-1 win to claim Game 3.

Now the Capitals lead the best-of-seven series 2-1. NHL media and fans on Twitter were truly amazed that Ovechkin continues to get wide open for goals time and time again.

Alex Ovechkin now has 28 playoff power play goals in his career. Itā€™s the seventh-most all-time, according to the Capitals PR. Ovechkin is also tied with Pittsburgh Penguinsā€™ Evgeni Malkin for most such goals among active players.

The jam-packed fans in Washington chanted ā€œOviā€ following the pivotal goal. If the Panthers want to avoid a colossal upset as the President Trophy winner, they may need to locate the guy wearing No. 8 in a Capitals uniform.
