Chase Young details ACL surgery and explains timetable for return

After missing last week’s OTA’s session, Washington Commanders defensive ends Chase Young and Montez Sweat were at this week’s session. Sweat missed last week for personal reasons. But, Young was off in Colorado rehabbing his torn ACL.

But this week the two reported to the voluntary workouts. Young didn’t do any activities on the field. Instead he continued to get rehab on his knee.

After practice Young opened up about his injury and rehab.

Young detailed that his ACL in his right knee was more of a reconstruction than a simple repair. He told reporters doctors used a graft from his left patellar tendon to reconstruct his torn ACL.

“Everything is going as planned,” Young said pertaining to his rehab, per NBC Sports’ Pete Hailey. “Feels good to be back and get around the guys.”

Young added he’s squatted a “substantial amount of weight.”

Yet, he would not give a timetable for when he’ll be able to get on the field.

“I want to be back as fast as I can, but won’t put a timetable on it,” Young said per NBC Sports’ J.P. Finlay. “I’m getting better fast.”

Young also said rehabbing in Colorado was a plan of Commanders trainers and doctors.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said the team’s doctor is “pleased” with Young’s progress. He confirmed Young’s rehab plan was laid out in part by the Commanders team trainer.

As for when he expects Young to be able to practice? Rivera won’t put a timetable on it, except it may not be until closer to the season.

Young’s struggles were laminated by the season-ending knee injury in Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A year after being named 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year, Young finished 2021 with 1.5 sacks.

As he goes through the rehab process, Young surely has his sights set on bouncing back from the injury and subpar sophomore campaign.
