The Washington Wizards appear to be in the market for a point guard this offseason. The NBA draft later this month may be a great opportunity to land a long-term solution. Thus, Saturday’s workout group may be the most intriguing of the team’s draft process.
Kentucky guard TyTy Washington and G-League Ignite’s Dyson Daniels highlighted Saturday’s workouts. Unfortunately, Washington had his session cut short due to a knee-to-knee collision earlier in the workout, according to The Athletic’s Josh Robbins.
Team trainers evaluated the knee and assessed Washington will be fine. Washington said he has future workouts planned with the New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs.
One notable portion he missed was the Wizards’ specialty of “20 lines in two minutes drill” which Daniels was able to finish, according to NBC Sports’ Chase Hughes. Reportedly, Daniels is the first prospect to finish the drill since Aaron Holiday.
The Wizards have been searching for a point guard since former cornerstone John Wall ruptured his Achilles during the 2019-2020 season. They thought they had one in veteran Russell Westbrook. But after he requested and was granted a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers following the 2020-2021 season.
TyTy Washington stands 6-foot-3, 197 pounds. He appears to be of the same build as Kentucky star point guards of recent past, including Wall. Washington averaged 12.5 points on 45.1% shooting from the field. He also averaged 3.9 assists and 1.3 steals in his lone season with the Wildcats.
Washington set Kentucky’s single-game assists record with 17 in a game against Georgia. The record was previously held by Wall.
Daniels is much taller. He stands 6-foot-8 out of Australia and in the build of some of the recent big point guards such as LeBron James and Luka Doncic. Daniels skipped college to play for the G-League Ignite team.
He averaged 11.3 points, 4.4 assists and 1.9 steals in 14 games for Ignite. He shot 44.9% from the field. However, he was subpar from distance, shooting 25.5% on threes.
Even with Bradley Beal’s future in question with the team, the Wizards landing a long-term solution at point guard as a high priority. They currently possess the No. 10 overall pick in this month’s draft. Washington and Daniels are projected to be still available when the Wizards are set to go on the clock.
