The Washington Nationals right-handed pitcher Stephen Strasburg will be going back on the injured list, manager Davey Martinez announced, per MASN’s Mark Zuckerman.
Strasburg has been scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves. He felt discomfort in his bullpen session following his return start last week. It’s unclear if it’s due to the same issue that kept him out the first two months of the season. The club is awaiting MRI results to determine the exact diagnosis.
However, Strasburg will officially be placed on the IL after Monday’s game.
Strasburg underwent thoracic outlet surgery last summer after being shut down for the 2021 season in July. He started the season on the 60-day injured list. After three rehab starts in the minor, he made his return to the Nationals on June 9 against the Miami Marlins.
Strasburg allowed seven runs and eight hits in 4 ⅔ innings. Following the game, Strasburg said he “felt good.”
Unfortunately, there was a turn of events during his bullpen session. Now, he’ll land back on the IL. Strasburg was named the 2019 World Series MVP. He signed a seven-year, $245 million contract the following offseason. Yet, he’s been limited to eight starts since the start of the 2020 season due to injuries.
