Attorney of Dan Snyder: ‘No valid basis’ for Congress to issue subpoena

The attorney of Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder says there is “no valid basis” for having Snyder testify under a subpoena. Instead, Snyder intends to appear virtually to the July 28 hearing with the House Oversight Committee voluntarily.

In a letter, Karen Patton Seymour responded to the Committee’s conditional acceptance of Snyder’s remote testimony. The Committee agreed to Snyder testifying on July 28, but only under the condition he is subpoenaed.

“Under the circumstances, there is no valid basis to issue a subpoena for Mr. Snyder’s testimony. We intend that he will testify voluntarily on July 28, as he has long agreed… looks forward to the opportunity to do,” Seymour said in the letter, per The Athletic’s Ben Standig.

Snyder and the Committee have been in back and forth talks after he declined an invitation to appear during a June 22 hearing. Committee chair Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) stated she intended to subpoena Snyder for a testimony.

However, the Committee has been unable to serve Snyder. He and his attorney appear reluctant to accept it. But in negotiations, Snyder’s attorney proposed him testifying remotely on July 28, as he will be in Israel for month of the month, recognizing his mother’s passing from a year ago.

“We are confident that Mr. Snyder be able to provide full and complete testimony during his voluntary appearance — a view the Committee apparently shared.. since the Committee invited him to testify voluntarily at a hearing held just three weeks ago.”

The standstill continues between Snyder and Congress.

Congress is in session until July 29 before convening on recess in August.
