Rookie linebacker Tre Walker had a change of heart and has returned to the Washington Commanders a day after deciding to retire from football.
Commanders head coach Ron Rivera announced on Friday, Walker chose to retire. However, less than 24 hours later, Walker returned to the team, according to ESPN’s John Keim.
Walker went undrafted this year out of Idaho. Washington signed him shortly after the conclusion of the NFL Draft.
There’s a lot of uncertainty at linebacker for the Commanders, particularly behind Cole Holcomb. Last year’s first-round draft pick Jamin Davis is looking to bounce back from a rookie season full of struggles. Depth behind that is also questionable even with Khaleke Hudson and David Mayo on the roster.
Practice reps won’t be hard to come by for Walker. Even if he doesn’t make the 53-man roster, he could be a candidate for the practice squad.
Still with Walker back, the Commanders added another linebacker, signing veteran Nathan Gerry. Gerry played in 46 games from 2017-2020 with the Philadelphia Eagles.
