Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. is in stable condition after being shot multiple times during an apparent carjacking attempt in Washington, D.C., according to multiple reports. NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay was the first to report the incident. Robinson’s injuries are considered non-life threatening.
The shooting occurred shortly before 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening along the 1000 block of H Street NE, according to D.C. police spokesman to the Washington Post.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, “at least two bullets” struck Robinson in the lower body.
The Commanders drafted Robinson in the third round of this year’s NFL Draft out of Alabama. He appeared to have emerged as Washington’s featured running back, taking the position from third-year pro Antonio Gibson.
Gibson had been given the role of top kick returner as a result of Robinson’s emergence.
After sitting for four years behind the likes of Najee Harris, Robinson got his chance as Alabama’s lead running back last season. He rushed for 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns while averaging 5.0 yards per carry. He also had 35 catches for 296 yards and two receiving touchdowns.
It’s unclear what injuries Robinson sustained in the shooting. Hopefully, he has a full and speedy recovery. His football career is now secondary for the moment as he recovers from a tragic turn of events.
