Commanders QB Taylor Heinicke trolls teammates after ODU upsets Virginia Tech

Brent Pry’s head coaching debut at Virginia Tech turned disastrous. The Hokies were upset 20-17 at Old Dominion in a game where Virginia Tech coaches were stuck in an elevator at halftime, the quarterback threw four interceptions, and some Hokies players’ items were stolen from the locker room in Norfolk, Virginia.

Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke had no empathy for the Hokies faithful. Heinicke is an Old Dominion alum. On Monday, he wore an ODU hat around the Commanders’ facility. Then he put ODU shirts inside the lockers of teammates Joey Slye, Logan Thomas, and Kendall Fuller, according to Pete Hailey of NBC Sports Washington.

All three are alums of Virginia Tech. Thomas was the starting quarterback during his time there before converting to tight end in the NFL. Heinicke said Fuller threw his hat on the ground.

Heinicke starred at Old Dominion. He won the Walter Payton Award in 2012 for being the most outstanding player in Division I FCS. That season Heinickethrew for 44 touchdowns and 14 interceptions with 5,076 passing yards. He set a single-game Division I passing record with 730 passing yards.

It’s the second time in three meetings Old Dominion beat Virginia Tech. The Monarchs jumped to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2014. This year is their first in the Sun Belt Conference. Yet, they have two wins over Virginia Tech, a power five program with prestige.

Heinicke’s gloating is about Old Dominion arriving and taking down an in-state giant. Heinicke has a year to relish the win. Old Dominion and Virginia Tech will kick off the 2023 season against each other in Blacksburg.
