The Washington Commanders already suffered their first L of the season with an epic merchandise fail. The Commanders will make their debut at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Before kickoff, NBC Sports Washington’s Pete Hailey passed along mugs featuring the Commanders logo with an outliner of the state of Washington on sale at FedEx Field.
Whoever made the mugs failed at geography and did not know the difference between Washington, D.C., and the state of Washington.
Team officials later told Hailey, that the mugs were not sold inside the stadium. Instead, they were being sold at a truck just outside.
However, the mugs were sold by an official Commanders truck right outside the team shop, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post. They have since been removed from the case.
The Commanders franchise has taken many PR hits in recent years. Some are much more concerning than others. Washington has restructured its front office, hiring Jason Wright as the team president to replace Bruce Allen.
Yet the hits keep coming which included the mishandling of Sean Taylor’s jersey retirement and the team’s name change reveal. Now, having a set of mugs with the wrong Washington is yet another hilarious blunder for the franchise.
