Maryland agrees to 10-year naming rights deal with SECU for football stadium

The University of Maryland announced SECU as the school’s official bank partner in a partnership that will rename its home football stadium from Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium to SECU Stadium. SECU will pay Maryland a guaranteed $11 million over ten years, including a $2.5 million gift that will support programs and facilities, including the construction of the Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance Center.

The stadium’s name will officially change on Oct. 1, as Maryland hosts Big Ten foe Michigan State. Maryland’s athletic department will net between $300,000 and $400,000 per year under the deal with SECU.

SECU (pronounced “see-cue”) or State Employees’ Credit Union of Maryland is the state of Maryland’s largest credit union.

The football stadium has gone several name changes since it opened in 1950. Among the names were Byrd Stadium, Chevy Chase Field at Byrd Stadium, and Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium before becoming Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium in 2015.

Capital One and Maryland mutually agreed to terminate their previous deal that ran through 2032 for SECU to take over the stadium’s naming rights.
