The saga involving Washington Commanders linebacker Jamin Davis and his coaches may have taken a turn, and it’s not good. After being a target of head coach Ron Rivera and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, Davis appears to respond with a since-deleted Instagram story.
One of Davis’ teammates, Commanders safety Bobby McCain, liked the post before Davis deleted it.
This past week, Del Rio and Rivera have alternated calling out Davis.
Last week, Del Rio called Davis’ performance in Week 1 “so-so,” saying the 2021 first-round draft pick didn’t play well in Washington’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Rivera backed Del Rio, calling his take an “honest assessment.”
Davis told the media he had spoken with Del Rio and knew what’s expected of him moving forward. It appeared he rescinded well in Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions, as Davis had four tackles and two tackles for losses, including a sack.
However, Rivera didn’t see it that way. After Washington’s 36-27 loss, the coach called Davis “inconsistent” and that “time is running out” on his opportunities.
Is there a disconnect between coaches and Davis? Are they simply trying to spark the struggling linebacker?
Regardless of the motives, public criticism has grown tiring to many onlookers. ESPN analyst and former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III chimed in against Rivera and Del Rio calling out Davis. The reaction has been similar on Twitter.
Davis’ deleted post on Monday added a layer to the drama. Washington faces the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in their first NFC East game of the season. But, the story leading into the week may have become Davis vs. Rivera and Del Rio.
