Nick Martin may be the starting center of the Washington Commanders for the foreseeable future. Washington placed offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer on injured reserve.
Schweitzer was already ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys with a concussion. He did not practice all week. Now, he’ll be out for at least the next four games.
The Commanders have elevated reserve offensive lineman Wes Martin from the practice squad.
Schweitzer is more of a Swiss Army knife for the Commanders. However, he filled in at center in Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles after the Commanders placed Chase Roullier on injured reserve with a knee injury.
Now Washington will turn to Nick Martin, who the team signed on Sept. 20. Martin played four seasons with the Houston Texans after being a second-round pick in 2016 out of Notre Dame.
Martin started 62 games with the Texans before he was released after the 2020 season. He served as a backup center for the Las Vegas Raiders last season. He spent this past training camp with the New Orleans Saints before being cut from the practice squad last month.
Nick Martin will make his 2022 debut in Dallas against his older brother, Cowboys All-Pro guard Zack Martin.
Fortunately, the Commanders may get some reinforcement at center. Washington’s head coach Ron Rivera said Friday, Tyler Larsen is expected to be activated from the physically unable-to-perform list next week.
