Washington Capitals forward Carl Hagelin looked to return to the ice after a near-catastrophic eye injury he suffered last season. His efforts to come back are now on hold. The Capitals announced Hagelin is out indefinitely following an arthroscopic surgical procedure for an ailing left hip Monday.
The Capitals held Hagelin out of training camp with a previously described lower-body injury.
An eye injury put Hagelin’s career in jeopardy last season. He appeared in 53 games but took a stick to his left eye during a March 1 practice.
Hagelin suffered a ruptured choroid. Initially, there was fear he would lose his eye. However, he underwent two surgeries. While he didn’t get all of his vision back in the eye, he hoped to resume his playing career.
This season is the final of Hagelin’s four-year, $11 million contract with the Capitals. It’ll start with him out while recovering from his latest hip surgery.
