Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera addressed Carson Wentz and the rest of the team Tuesday morning about his “quarterback” comments from the day prior.
“I spoke to my team this morning,” Rivera said, per Pete Hailey of NBC Sports Washington. “I basically told them I said some things that were misconstrued. I told them guys that I should know better.”
Rivera added he had a “nice” conversation with Wentz beyond the team address.
Following Tuesday’s practice, Wentz spoke to the media and responded to the situation.
“Coach addressed it, handled it, and [it’s] nothing I’m overly concerned about,” Wentz said of Rivera, per Hailey.
Wentz claimed he wasn’t aware of Rivera’s comments on Monday until the Commanders’ head of public relations contacted him about it.
Rivera said the “quarterback” is reason the Commanders were in last place and behind the three other teams in the NFC East. The comment put the NFL world in a stir. Former quarterback Alex Smith, who played under Rivera in Washington in 2020, blasted the coach “driving the bus over” Wentz.
Rivera clarified Tuesday morning with BIG 100’s Don Geronimo Show that he meant the other quarterbacks in the NFC East have more familiarity with their system and teams. Wentz is in his first season with the Commanders.
