Troy Apke isn’t done with the Washington Commanders just yet. The Commanders signed the defensive back to the practice squad two weeks after releasing him.
Apke fills a spot on the practice squad vacated by linebacker Khaleke Hudson. The Commanders signed Hudson from the practice squad to the 53-man roster Friday. Washington also placed cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields on injured reserve.
A fourth-round draft pick in 2018, Apke has spent four seasons with the Commanders, appearing in 50 games with nine starts.
He re-signed with the team in March on a one-year deal. However, he got released in August. Then, the Commanders re-signed him to his first stint on the practice shortly after the final cuts.
The Commanders released Apke from the practice squad on Oct. 5. It appeared to be the end of his tenure in Washington. But that was not the case, as proven by Friday’s signing.
Meanwhile, Hudson adds depth to a thin linebacker group. A fifth-round pick of Washington’s in 2020, Hudson started this season on the practice squad. The Commanders elevated him to the game-day roster in Week 5 and Week 6. He has played 41 snaps on special teams and one on defense. Now, he’ll be part of the 53-man roster.
