The Washington Commanders have made a decision to place quarterback Carson Wentz on injured reserve with a fractured right ring finger. Wentz will miss at least the next four games, including his return to Indianapolis and Philadelphia against his former teams, the Colts and Eagles.
Wentz fractured his finger in Commanders’ 12-7 win in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears. He banged his throwing hand against the swiping hand of Bears defensive lineman Justin Jones.
Wentz underwent surgery on Monday in Los Angeles. NFL Network reported on Monday, Wentz may miss four to six weeks. Washington and doctors wanter to wait a couple of days following the procedure to get an official timeframe for his recovery.
Taylor Heinicke will start at quarterback for the Commanders beginning Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. Rookie Sam Howell will serve as the backup.
Washington signed Jake Fromm to the practice squad this week.
