Carson Wentz feels fresh after returning from broken finger

If the Washington Commanders decide to make a quarterback change, Carson Wentz appears ready to go. Wentz has not played since Week 6, when he suffered a broken finger. He was placed on injured reserve but activated last week.

Wentz told reporters Wednesday his finger felt good for a couple of weeks now, according to the Washington Post’s Nicki Jhabvala.

“Not sure the last time I felt quite like this in December,” Wentz said. “I actually feel fresh and everything. So that’s a blessing, I guess.”

Taylor Heinicke has started the past eight games in place of Wentz. The Commanders are 5-2-1 during that span. However, Heinicke has not played lights out, and his limitations magnify in pivotal spots. That includes Washington’s 20-12 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday. Heinicke had two critical fumbles, including one that turned into a defensive touchdown.

Heinicke has 11 total touchdowns against nine turnovers in those eight games.

But Commanders head coach Ron Rivera is sticking with Heinicke for now, but the coach admitted he might have to reconsider the situation at some point.

Wentz started the first six games of the season, tossing 10 touchdowns against seven turnovers. He also got sacked 23 times. The Commanders compiled a 2-4 record, winning his last start the game he injured his finger.

The Commanders are clinging to the seventh and final NFC playoff spot. Washington has a daunting task against the red-hot San Francisco 49ers on Saturday. If Taylor Heinicke struggles, it may be enough for Rivera to pull the trigger on a switch. Carson Wentz and his finger apparently will be ready to go if needed.
