Usually, a tub of mayo doused on your head would be frustrating. However, for Maryland football head coach Mike Locksley the moment was celebratory.
Maryland defeated North Carolina State on Friday, 16-12, in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte. Following the win as a promise, Locksley let bowl officials dump a glob of Duke’s Mayo on him. Locksley did so in style with a Maryland Big Hat.
Locksley appeared not to blink wearing the Big Hat. Some may scoff at Locksley using the Big Hat as a layer of protection. But he most likely wanted to represent the company NogginsBoss, which is behind the Big Hat wave popularized by Washington Commanders’ rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr.
Maryland took advantage of two interceptions by N.C. State quarterback Ben Finley. The Terrapins also rode the leg of kicker Chad Ryland, who made three field goals.
Maryland improved to 8-5 to finish the season. It’s the most wins by the program since 2010. The Terrapins have their first back-to-back winnings seasons since 2013-2014.
Maryland finished 4-5 in the Big Ten conference schedule. But the Terrapins went a perfect 4-0 in non-conference play. While the program still has steps to take, the mayo bath was a fitting celebration for Mike Locksley.
