Could Commanders return to RFK Stadium site following sale?

If Dan Snyder decides to sell the Washington Commanders, a return to the nation’s capital could be in the cards. Snyder has struggled to secure a new stadium. Officials from the surrounding DMV area have balked at Snyder’s attempt, including Washington, D.C., the Commanders’ preferred location for their next stadium.

If Snyder sells the Commanders there is good news. According to JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington, there is a firm belief that the team returning to the ground of old RFK Stadium is a “real possibility.”

Some ownership groups believe they create a practice facility at the Commanders’ current home stadium, FedEx Field, in Landover Maryland. Then they’d build a new stadium where RFK once stood. Washington currently practices in Ashburn, Virginia.

The Washington franchise played at RFK Stadium from 1961 until 1996. The team moved to FedEx Field in nearby Prince George’s County, Maryland in 1997 under former owner the late Jack Kent Cooke.

Now abandoned, RFK Stadium is set to be demolished by the end of the year.

Washington’s lease at FedEx Feld expires in 2026. The team hoped for a domed stadium but has struck out with D.C., Maryland, and Virginia in large due to Snyder, who faces several investigations stemming from sexual harassment and workplace misconduct allegations.

Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris emerged as a favorite to buy the Commanders from Snyder. A potential sale could come as early as March. A sale of the Commanders could spark D.C. and Maryland to reconsider working with the team for a new stadium.
