Tres Barrera thanks Nats after signing minor-league deal with Cardinals

Free agent catcher Tres Barrera signed a minor-league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals after seven seasons with the Washington Nationals. Barrera thanked the Nationals for allowing him to fulfill his dream of playing in Major League Baseball shortly after his signing with the Cardinals.

Tres Barrera appeared in 51 games with the Nats across three seasons. He hit .231/.317/.315 with two home runs and 14 RBI. In 2020, he was suspended 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

Last season, he hit .180/.212/.200 with four RBI in 53 plate appearances.

Barrera elected for free agency in November after the Nationals outrighted him to Triple-A. He receives a Spring Training invite with the Cardinals. However, the 28-year-old is likely to start the 2023 season with Triple-A Memphis.

Last month, the Cardinals signed three-time All-Star catcher Willson Contreras from the Chicago Cubs.
