The Breakaway Challenge at the NHL’s All-Star Skills Competition turned into the Sergei Ovechkin show. The four-year-old son of Alex Ovechkin stole the moment alongside his dad and Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby.
Ovechkin and Crosby appeared to team up for the challenge. Former NHL player-turned-ESPN analyst PK Subban joined in on the moment, asking for autographs of his jersey from the two legends. But Subban requested another signature. That’s when Sergei skated on the ice.
Sergei Ovechkin tagged with Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby for a three-man breakaway on Hall of Fame goaltender Roberto Luongo. Sergei skated the center lane as Crosby and Ovechkin took the wings. The most adorable moment was Sergei stick-tapping his father before going five-hole on Luongo for the goal.
The judges on hand that included the WWE tag team, the Street Profits, gave the trio a perfect 40 score. Crosby and the Ovechkins won the Breakaway Challenge.
It was a fun-filled night for Sergei. He dressed in the Capitals “Screamin’ Eagle” uniform with Ovi Jr. on his nameplate. He also led the Metropolitan All-Stars out on the ice before warming up with his father.
Ovechkin acknowledged Ovi Jr. being a lefty, “Yeah, I know. It is what is. Nothing I can do.”
The trip to Sunrise is Sergei’s first All-Star experience. However, this is Alex Ovechkin’s 13th All-Star nod. He has skipped four in the past, but he vowed to be a part of this year’s festivities. Sergei’s insertion presumably has made this go-around one of the most memorable for Ovechkin.
