Derek Carr won’t accept any trade, wants to be released

Derek Carr will have a new NFL home next season. He would like to decide where he wants to go. The veteran quarterback has informed the Las Vegas Raiders he will invoke his no-trade clause by not accepting a trade to the New Orleans Saints or any other team, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Instead, Derek Carr will use free agency to decide on his next team. The Raiders expect to release him in the coming days.

The Raiders were hoping to trade Carr before Feb. 15. That is when Carr’s $32.9 million salary for next season plus $7.5 million for the 2024 season becomes guaranteed. Any such guarantee complicates a trade.

The Raiders granted Carr permission by the Raiders to visit other teams and possibly hammer out a restructured contract that they already had discussed trade parameters. Yet, Carr is taking control of the situation by refusing any trade.

Several teams expect to be suitors in the Derek Carr market. Along with the Saints, the Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New York Jets could be interested. The list of teams, including the Washington Commanders, could grow now that acquiring Carr won’t involve lost draft capital.
