Another major hurdle cleared for the Washington Commanders to land Eric Bieniemy as their offensive coordinator. For some time, it appeared the Commanders’ largest competition for Bieniemy would be its Beltway neighbors, the Baltimore Ravens. However, the Ravens have gone ahead and named an offensive coordinator.
The Ravens announced Tuesday the team hired former University of Georgia assistant Todd Monken as their offensive coordinator. Monken will replace Greg Roman.
Baltimore expected to talk with Bieniemy this week after he helped lead the Kansa City Chiefs to its second Super Bowl title in four seasons. But that no longer is the case. Does that mean Baltimore knows Bieniemy is destined for Washington?
The Commanders expect to meet with Bieniemy sometime after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade. On Tuesday, Washington will interview Roman, the Ravens’ former offensive coordinator.
Bieniemy has been linked to the Commanders for the past month. He has been the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator for the past five seasons.
Kansas City has been one of the most lethal offenses in the NFL over that span. Bieniemy has gotten credited for the Chifes’ success along with head coach Andy Reid and two-time NFL MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Presumably, Bieniemy wants to step away from the shadows of Reid. Reid has been the team’s primary play-caller and has significant input into the scheme of the Chiefs’ offense. Bieniemy is looking for a head coach position. He’s unfortunately gotten passed up in the past several hiring cycles.
Leaving Kansas City to get from the shadows of Ried and Mahomes may be appealing for Bieniemy. Will Washington present the best opportunity for him? As offensive coordinator positions are filled, it’s becoming increasingly likely Bieniemy feels the Commanders are his best opportunity. Apparently, despite Commanders head coach Ron Rivera is on the hot seat entering his fourth year in Washington.
Roman will be the seventh candidate interviewed by the Commanders. Charles London took a pass game coordinator position with the Tennessee Titans. Meanwhile, Thomas Brown has interviewed with other teams for their offensive coordinator vacancies.
With Monken’s hire in Baltimore, the dominoes continue to fall, propping the door open for Eric Bieniemy to Washington.
