The Georgetown Hoyas had a pleasant surprise when they took the floor at Hinkel Fieldhouse Sunday against Butler. After missing two games due to personal matters, Georgetown center Qudus Wahab returned to the team.
Wahab had 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench. Sophomore guard Brandon Murray led the team with 17 points as the Hoyas pulled off a rare road win, 68-62.
The win snaps Georgetown’s 22-game road losing streak. The Hoyas last road win occurred at DePaul on February 27, 2020. Georgetown picked up its second Big East win of the season. The Hoyas are 2-15 in conference play and 7-21 overall.
Just last month, Georgetown snapped a 29-game Big East losing streak.
Wahab’s absence sparked rumors that he left the team. Georgetown head coach Patrick Ewing would only confirm that Wahab was dealing with personal family matters.
Wahab started his collegiate career at Georgetown in 2019. However, he transferred to Maryland following the 2020-21 season, in which the Hoyas made an improbable run to win the Big East Tournament. The change in scenery proved disastrous for Wahab.
He fell out of favor with Maryland interim head coach Danny Manning following the departure of Mark Turgeon. Wahab, once again, entered the transfer portal last spring before deciding to return to Ewing and the Hoyas.
Sunday’s return adds to his embattled collegiate career. Qudus Wahab is averaging 10.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 24.1 minutes through 26 games this season.
