While reports have suggested the sale of the Washington Commanders is imminent, don’t expect the NFL owners to vote on the matter in the immediate future. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, there is no vote scheduled for the Commanders’ sale during next week’s NFL owners’ meetings in Arizona.
Charles Gasparino of FOX Business Network reports potential bidders are still scrambling for money to meet Commanders’ current owner Dan Snyder’s asking price. The group led by Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils owner Josh Harris appears to be the favorite in the bidding process.
NBA legend and business mogul Magic Johnson recently joined Harris’ group, which already included D.C. area billionaire Mitchell Rales. The addition of Johnson indicates the Harris group is still trying to drum up money.
Dan Snyder and his wife Tanya reportedly cleared out of the Commanders’ facility months ago. Amazon mogul Jeff Bezos and Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta have also shown interest. However, Bezos is reportedly barred from the bidding process by Dan Snyder due to his grudge against the Bezos-owned Washington Post. Although other reports suggest Bezos could still be in.
Breer adds that May would likely be the earliest NFL owners could approve the Commanders’ sale during their meetings in Minneapolis. Any team sale would require at least 24 votes from the 32 owners.
