The Washington Commanders have not ruled out the possibility of drafting a quarterback. The team signed veteran Jacoby Brissett to push second-year fifth-round draft pick, Sam Howell. Yet, the Commanders may add to the QB room in this year’s draft, and their process may lead to former Tennessee Volunteers star Hendon Hooker.
According to John Keim of ESPN, the Commanders have scheduled a top-30 visit with Hooker.
Hendon Hooker started his collegiate career at Virginia Tech. After three underwhelming years with the Hokies, he transferred to Tennessee. Playing under Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel, Hooker’s career took off. He threw for 6,080, 58 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 24 games in Knoxville. He added over 1,000 rushing and ten touchdowns on the ground.
Last season, Hooker was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year. Tennessee ranked as high as No. 2 in the AP poll. He was one of the favorites to win the Heisman for much of the season. However, Hooker suffered a torn ACL in his left knee last November in a game against South Carolina.
Hooker did not throw during the NFL Scouting Combine in February nor Tennessee’s pro day. Yet, he has impressed in meetings with NFL teams. The talent and potential are intriguing. His age of 25 could be a plus and negative in the teams’ evaluation.
Hooker will meet the Commanders the last week visits are allowed, allowing Washington to get a medical update on his knee, per Albert Breer of MMQB.
The injury may not vastly affect Hooker’s draft stock. Pundits have him rising into the first round of mock drafts. The Commanders select 16th overall in the opening round.
A team that drafts Hooker can potentially stash him away during his rookie season, allowing his full recovery. Could that be Washington’s plan?
The Commanders could also be doing due diligence if they want to trade down for a team eager to jump the board for Hooker. Considering the makeup of the current roster, everything is on the table for Washington when they get on the clock at No. 16.
